RocketFest 2025 – Water Rocket Competition
RocketFest 2025 takes place alongside REXTRO, adding an exciting and educational dimension to the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna. The competition provides a practical and engaging platform for students to experience the fundamentals of rocketry, using safe and simple materials.
A Historic First for Sri Lanka
This year introduces a major milestone: the first two-stage water rocket competition ever held in Sri Lanka. This advanced category opens the door for students to experiment with multi-stage separation, improved flight performance, and higher-altitude engineering concepts.
With over 70 participants, including 10 university teams and 12 school teams from across the country, RocketFest 2025 showcases the growing interest in aerospace and STEM education among Sri Lankan youth.
Competition Categories
- School Category
Basic water rockets evaluated for distance and target accuracy. - Undergraduate Category
Advanced two-stage water rockets tested for altitude, safe stage separation, descent recovery, and precision landing.
Purpose and Vision
RocketFest 2025 is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and real-world problem-solving. Students engage in the complete engineering design cycle—planning, building, testing, and refining their rockets—while applying scientific concepts such as motion, thrust, pressure, and Newton’s laws.
The event promotes teamwork, critical thinking, and a spirit of innovation, encouraging participants to explore engineering beyond the classroom.
Collaborative Support
To ensure a high-quality and scientifically accurate competition:
- ACCIMT (Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies) joins as the Technical Partner, offering expert oversight and credibility.
- American Spaces Matara supports outreach and visibility, strengthening STEM engagement within the community.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Through its inclusive structure and hands-on approach, RocketFest 2025 aims to nurture future engineers and innovators. By bringing together school and university students on a shared platform, the event builds a strong foundation for aerospace education in Sri Lanka.
